As you have probably noticed, we've had some downtime. I have contacted the hosting company and apparently we are using too much resources on the shared server. Given the circumstances there are only a few things we can do:
- Look for a new server
- Upgrade to a Virtual Private Server
- Keep going until they tell us enough is enough.

After a couple moves in the last few months, I am really tired of moving and I'm sure that we would have the same issue wherever we go, so I wouldn't like to move. However, upgrading would be an increased cost of $40 a month, which is close to $500 a year (ouch!), so I really don't know what to do.

Option 3 could work, but it might be a bit risky to wait until they shut us down completely and then we would have to scramble to have the site back up once again.

So, I really don't know what to do... It seems that every time that we get comfortable with a hosting, something goes wrong and we have to fight to keep the site going.

Damn man that's messed up. With the economy the way it is that would be only adding to your financial burden. If you take option 3 won't they just shut it down again in only a few days then you would just be repeating the cycle. I wish I could help but that's something a lowly grunt like me really has no power in. Hey if had the money man, I would donate it without second guessing myself. That's a really messed up predicament. Lastly what does that mean using to much resources? Forgive my lack of knowledge.

Noooo. WTF. $40 per month is pretty much. It will be best to move, but not now, is time to breathe out.

I'm not asking for donations, so don't worry. I'm just saying that these are the options we have

Too much resources means that since we are on a shared server (one computer for a bunch of sites) we are only supposed to use a set amount of CPU cycles, database connections and such, and since we have a good amount of users (usually over 40 connected) we are surpassing those limits.

When they see a site that does that, they shut it down, because they don't know if it is a spam attack against the server, and they don't want one site using up the resources of others...

Personally I think we should all pitch in and buy our own server. lol

What a sucking situation we are !!! the site is too powerful for the host if I have correctly understand ?!
The second solution could be work in the last worst situation but 500 dollar a year... it's very expensive !!

I think that if you ask who will be agree to donate to buy a new server you schould be surprise

Buying our own server is not as easy as it sounds...

You still need to buy the bandwidth to service the site, and I don't really know how much that would cost, and of course you need a pretty fast connection to be able to serve so many users loading a bunch of images.

I have never done it, so I don't know what it requires, so if someone has ever bought their own server and can provide some info, please do so.
Although I believe they are pretty expensive, and it if fails, then you are screwed... If a hosted server fails, they have to replace it at no cost to you, and your data is usually backed up on their end...

What can we do for the moment ?
Schould we looking for a new hosting server or think about the second solution ?
It's not an esay situation! It's more than a bad situation that the site work very well !!
