Editable DVD Covers by n2liquid on Mon Sep 21st, 2009 - 11:33 pm

Hi there, folks

As I didn't know theAnimeGallery had a forum (hey, I'm new), I've sent a suggestion to the site's administrator via the contact form of the site, and I guess I shouldn't have. Anyways, I'm posting my suggestion here again so I can see what users think about it.
I've always wondered why couldn't there be a site where people posted their DVD covers' image project files like .psd (Photoshop image format), .xcf (GIMP image format), etc, so that their works aren't tied to their own native language and/or media displacement of episodes (e.g. sometimes I save 4 episodes in a media, sometimes the whole series). I mean, if it is because people could rip their names out of the image, that's not at all true, because they could merge as many surfaces as possible (including their nicknames) and only leave editable the text parts like "the story so far", episode number or image parts like screenshots (sometimes they put this on the covers) and etc. That would be cool.
But what would be even cooler would be if theAnimeGallery's had its own in-browser simple image editor (that can be done using ExtJS or GWT treachery, I think; no Flash stuff). See, you could in a tedious day pick some cool covers to translate and publish to others. And you could rip off that hellish "Episode 2" from the cover you so wanted to print for a cover to hold the whole series inside.

What are your thoughts about it? Do you think it's worth it? I know the admin is busy for such a thing - I've seen his thread of features and modules -, but part of this editor is something I could try doing at school (I'm always sleeping there anyway, maybe I should do something useful).

So, do you think it would work well?

Oh, but what I said addresses just that! [: For example, I'm brazilian. I wouldn't go through the hassle of making my own covers in portuguese just because I like it, specially because I'm not good with image editing. But if it was that easy to translate covers, I would be more than pleased to translate them from english to portuguese.

It will be interesting, but i think it will be complicated and it will occupy many resources of server.
But with uploading .pspimage, .psd, .xcf it could work.

Exactly. That was something I've pointed out on the admin contact form. It would increase CPU load because of the renderings, though space-wise it wouldn't take much more. I think I'll do some tests, then. I'll report the results back.

Hi n2liquid,

As Nujin has said, the major problem with this idea is resources. Space would be no issue at all, since we pretty much have unlimited space, the problem is with CPU usage. As it is right now, we are getting some complaints from the host about our CPU usage, and that's why the site sometimes goes down... so I don't think we can afford adding an image processing script to the site.

I really like the idea, but for the time being, I really think it is not feasible due to CPU constraints.

If we ever upgraded out of the shared servers to a dedicated one, we could try out, but that would mean 4x the cost and we cannot afford it at the moment. Sorry :(

Oh? And what about this lib I just found? http://www.pixastic.com/lib/

Yes, yes.. No Internet Explorer. But it is already part of HTML5, so it is a matter of time for it to be available in all browsers. That would solve the problem, wouldn't it? Unfortunately I think I'm just too busy to work on this. Maybe someday I code that down, if somebody else doesn't.. Just make sure you keep this f***ing site online with those f***ing lots of high resolution images I so loved!! :D I haven't seen such a thing done for free anywhere else.
You guys really rock.

It's a great idea none the less. But if we are at the highes point on are CPU. Adding something as small as that could put us over the top and that would be a big problem. On top of that it can't use Internet Explore. A lot of people use Internet Explore hire I can tell you that. I know it well be fix for it. but a lot of people will feel left out if we use it right now. But I think the most problem is the CPU we juest can't do it right now and if we had to go upgrading shared servers it would be 4x the cost and people mit have to pay for it. We don't need to do that to the people ever.

But we will keep that idea ready win ever can use it and for right now I think IGC has a lot to do for the site for right now. So please give it some time and thank you for the idea it's a great one. ^^

I'm sorry, but I guess you didn't understand my last post. If theAnimeGallery.com got to become a paid service I'd get mad to the bones, too XD That JavaScript library shows that it's possible to make the editor right from the clients' browsers using HTML5's new "canvas" element. What it means is that the users browsers would be the ones to do the rendering. The server would only need to serve images that could be assembled and rendered by the very browser. That would not incur anything more but a few more information to store, like fontset images, and a little more bandwidth, as a consequence of such information. Please note that the demonstration of Pixastic does not contact the server to do anything. Those renderings are all browser-based. That's why I posted it. I'm not forcing the issue, as I myself have already noted on my first post that doing these renderings from the server-side could potentially render the idea unfeasible. I've posted because I found a way to work that problem out, so I guess the only left is actually time to implement. As for people being felt left-off because of Internet Explorer, this editor would obviously be optional. People would still use the site normally, but Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari users could edit the images ready for this editor feature. And, please, don't get me wrong, btw.. I'm not requiring, requesting or insisting that IGC implement it. I wanted to do it myself, actually :D :D :D I just need some time.. as I said, I'll try doing that as soon as I get bored XD I guess IGC wouldn't mind if I did it, would he?

Thanks,
n2

Mm.. I get your point but.. one thing.. There aren't enough people willing to post the photoshop cover images and 2nd thing.. most of them are scans.. not made by ps .. -.!
