[Not so] Bad news. Very bad news... 2008-11-11 - 07:23:27

Update: We have moved to a new server and everything is ready. If you still have any problems, let us know in the forums or in this news posts. There might be a couple of things that need to be re-configured after the change, but we have taken care of most of the issues. Let's hope that this does not happen again, so we don't have to waste a good week of image validation and other stuff. Thanks for the support while we were moving and I hope you enjoy the site more than ever. Hello every one, I think I have horrible news. I have received an email from my server saying that the site has been flagged for copyright infringement during an internal audit and I have to remove all copyrighted material before 11pm today. I asked what they thought was copyrighted, to see if I could just remove certain things and leave everything else in place (i.e. just removing the scans or original dvd covers) but they said that even an image with a single character on it is considered copyrighted by the author, so wallpapers are also considered unless they are 100% fan art, which means that 99% of the images on the site are considered copyrighted. I sent them a second reply, telling them that then ANY site with a banner showing an anime character or videogame character or movie screenshot is in the same situation and their answer was that yes, they are, but just because everyone else does it, does not mean that they allow it, which is total BS. So, there is nothing I can do about it, and I am going to have to remove the images and move everything to another server. Thankfully, I have a few hours to create a backup copy of everything that is on the site and then move it to a different server, but it might take a few days to have everything up and running as we want. I am going to see if I can ask for more time before they close the site so that the transition is not so abrupt, but I can't promise you anything. Since the server names are registered somewhere else, the URL would be the same when we are back up on the new server. I hope to see you all when the new server is up and running. If anyone knows of a good server that is not too expensive. I'll keep you all posted here. The forums will remain open during the transition, since they do not host the images, but later today I will have to actually remove all the images from the site.

Tengo un backup del 25 de octubre y ahora mismo estoy creando otro para tener todas las imagenes, asi q perderse, no se deberia de perder ninguna imagen cuando estemos en el nuevo servidor. -------------------------------------------- I do have a backup from October 25th and I am creating another one right now, so we should not loose any images (hopefully) when we move the new server.

I have two backup plans. 1. Moving everything to a different server and forgetting about this one for the gallery 2. Moving just the images, and dividing the load between this server (pages) and the other (images) The problem with the second approach would be the way we handle uploads. I don't know if the image server will allow a connection from the page server for an upload... but we might be able to pull it off... I think that having these two plans might allow us to have almost no down time at all.

@Yuh-yin: I've stopped accepting uploads until we solve all this issues. Since I need to move from one to the other, it doesn't make sense to keep uploading files to this server (posts are fine, since I can always backup the database and copy the latest version over. @charlie: I saw your email a few minutes ago, thanks for the recommendation, but I already found a server. I only paid for one month, so we can check it out and see if it fits our needs. I have already found one problem, but I hope I can work around it (it's with the naming of files) but we'll worry about that later. I think we are going to start with option number 2, until I get the new server ready for navigation and then once everything is ready, we'll do the complete move. Thanks

Small update to my previous post... The problem I was having is now solved. I was able to make the server work as it was working here. The problem was related to the way the files are named and the URLs are created. We were using some Type Forcing to server /series/ /image/ /tags/ as php, and that was not allowed in the new server, but using a series of rewrites it does work now, so no changes in the URLs will be required...

Kimiko-chan, it does suck. I understand their point, but the issue is that I truly believe that creating wallpapers falls under fair use. We are not selling the wallpapers, so we are not benefiting from the use or the characters and we are not taking any revenue away from the original source since us having wallpapers does not mean that the studios are going to sell less DvDs. In fact, we are helping them by advertising their products and showing more series than just Naruto, which is all you see on Tv. Anyway, all of this is resolved now, so we can come back to enjoying our images and forget about this.
